An der Universität Trier studieren insgesamt ca. 15.200 Studenten. Sie wurde im Jahr 1970 gegründet.Die Stadt Trier hat etwa 105.000 Einwohner. Studiengebühren fallen im Bundesland Rheinland- Pfalz keine an, jedoch ist ein halbjähriger Semesterbeitrag in Höhe von etwa 210 Euro für Studien-Anfänger fällig. Darin enthalten ist ein Semesterticket.
Die Hochschule vergibt 20 % der Studienplätze nach der Wartezeit und 80 % nach der Abiturdurchschnittsnote.
